Lying dumbbell curls is an effective exercise that isolates and targets the biceps brachii muscles, which are located in the front of the upper arm. In this exercise, the individual lies flat on a bench with the feet firmly planted on the ground and the dumbbells held in each hand. The elbows are positioned at the sides of the body and the palms are facing towards the ceiling. Slowly, the dumbbells are lifted towards the shoulders while the elbows remain stationary at the sides of the body, contracting the biceps. The movement is then reversed, and the dumbbells are lowered back to the starting position in a controlled manner. This exercise is beneficial for increasing hypertrophy (muscle growth) of the biceps and also strengthens the brachialis and brachioradialis muscles, which are located in the forearm. Lying dumbbell curls also activates the stabilizing muscles of the shoulder and upper back, such as the anterior and posterior deltoids and the rhomboids, due to the position of the individual lying down. It is a great variation to traditional, standing bicep curls and can be executed using different weights to suit individual strength and fitness levels.
